Red Scare

McCarthyism and the CIA

The Committee: Due to McCarthy’s several accusations during the Red Scare, no one trusts each other. Those who were suspected of being affiliated with the communist party lost their jobs and were not allowed to get jobs anywhere else, often having no other way to support themselves and their families. As a consequence of the spontaneous actions going on and panic spreading, American citizens are distrustful and skeptical of the government. Many of their rights to express political opinions and freedom of speech have been taken away. Many have been wrongfully convicted. Many are wary of what the government is going to do next. In this committee, it is currently the year 1951, and the red scare is ongoing. It is up to you to figure out a way to best address the Red Scare within the people and the government without causing any more distrust between them and try to find a way for America to prosper again. You are all tasked with navigating the political, social, and cultural dynamics of this period. The U.S. government, citizens, and institutions continue to grapple with the perceived threat of communist infiltration. Delegates in this crisis committee are challenged to find ways to address the Red Scare while balancing two major concerns: protecting national security from genuine communist threats and defending civilians' constitutional rights and democratic values in the face of growing governmental overreach.

The Topic: In this crisis committee, we have a diverse group of characters ranging from journalists to government officials. We are covering the Second Red Scare, and the timeline is within the year 1951. Tensions run high in the United States as many are anxious that communism has infiltrated the Government and continues to influence the decisions made about the country. The House Un-American Activities, established in 1938, continues to conduct investigations in order to expose potential communists within the government or Hollywood. This had become more rampant after World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. The FBI continues to aid many legislative investigations of communist activities as well. This committee will be starting from January 1951 and on. During committee, it is your responsibility to find the best way to address the ongoing distrust between the government and the people without threatening national security and the human rights of citizens. American citizens eagerly follow the captivating trials of the Rosenbergs and Alger Hiss. As the public opinion of McCarthy and communism continues to evolve, it is up to you to see where this takes the nation.
