Manhattan Project

The Race to Nuclear Weapons

The Committee: In this committee, delegates will have to make ethical decisions while considering the competing nations in the overall scheme of nuclear research and scientific development. Ranging from investigating different elements to prompting nuclear testing, it will be on the delegates to truly shape this historical committee. Specific to our committee, we are focusing on a historical crisis based on the race to develop the first atomic bomb following the discourse of World War II. The Manhattan Project was a research and development program that led to the creation of the first nuclear weapons. Concerned and worried that Nazi Germany was going to develop the atomic bomb first, the United States in partnership with the United Kingdom and Canada began the race for the first atomic bomb. The US developed laboratories where this research would be carried out, specifically Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Hanford, Washington, and Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The Topic: The Manhattan Project is one of the most pivotal and significant moments in modern history. Initiated during World War II, in response to the growing concern over Nazi Germany’s nascent advancements in nuclear research, the Manhattan project was a result of the United States expediting their own research. In its essence, the Manhattan Project was a large-scale research initiative led by ingenious physicists aimed at creating the first nuclear weapons. Aside from being a competitive endeavor that accelerated the development of the atomic bomb, it involved the joint effort and teamwork of thousands of scientists, military personnel, and engineers. A world crisis is brewing, peering upon the horizons of the leading countries of the world. However, beneath the surface a new arms race has just begun and would set the world into a state of chaos and what would seem like eternal turmoil. Leading scientific researchers scattered across the world, pioneer general physical science research and are looking upon the efficacy and feasibility of the world’s first nuclear weapon. Nations would begin the long road in developing century-long projects of ultimate destruction. As scientists in this pioneering innovation in nuclear science, you will be the ones directly using resources firsthand to carry out the operation. This ranges from discussion of specific elements, innovation and application of such elements, and nuclear testing. Furthermore, the Manhattan Project entails governmental policies that pave the way and secure the possibility of your scientific developments. Whether or not opposing countries surpass your status in your respective project awaits to be decided. The fate of the world is in your hands.
